UBD student leaves for Japan to attend study tour

Having attended Japanese Language classes for four years, an Art and Creative Technology Major at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) was given a chance to experience the Japanese culture under the ‘Study-Tour for Outstanding Students of the Japanese Language’ award courtesy of the Japan Embassy to Brunei Darussalam.

Jasmine Koh Hui Zhen will be leaving for Japan today and is scheduled to attend two weeks of lectures and other activities at the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai. She will be touring Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Kyushu areas while participating in a home stay programme with a Japanese family. She will also attend lectures on Japanese culture, Japanese calligraphy, drum and the Japanese Art of Weaponless Self-Defence.

In an interview with media representatives at the Embassy of Japan yesterday, Jasmine said she studied Japanese Language under the Continuing Education Department, Ministry of Education. Already considered to be at an ‘advanced-level’ in Japanese Language, Jasmine is also taking Intermediate Korean and Elementary French classes in UBD. “Learning many languages would enable me to travel around the world without barriers,” she said.

According to an officer at the Japan Embassy to Brunei Darussalam, Mr Akira Ichioka, Jasmine was one of the three short listed candidates invited for an interview at the Embassy. “This programme has been going on for the past few years and students are again invited to apply next year,” he added.

Mr Akira said that they hoped the programme would serve as an incentive for Bruneian students to learn Japanese. About ten Bruneians are currently studying in Japan under a Master’s Degree, First Degree and Vocational/Technical levels. “Interest in the Japanese Language and culture has been on the rise in Brunei. There are about 300 Bruneians undertaking Japanese Language classes, mostly in UBD and Institute Technology Brunei (ITB). Brunei has also employed two Japanese teachers, one under MoE and another under UBD,” he said.

  1. Hi! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice from an established blog.
Is it tough to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick. I’m thinking about creating my own but I’m not sure where to begin. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Many thanks

  2. When I initially left a comment I appear to have clicked on the -Notify me when
new comments are added- checkbox and from now on whenever a
comment is added I get four emails with the same comment.
Perhaps there is a means you are able to remove me from that service?

    Thanks!
